Russia has bombed Pentagon backed rebels in Syria. The attack happened near the borders of Jordan, Iraq and Syria close to a town named Tanf. This area is not usually where Russia has been concentrating their efforts. The attack was against about 180 rebels who were there as part of Pentagons train and equip program. There are two UN resolutions in place that demand that Al-Qaeda in Syria is to be fought no matter what. The US has in the past asked Russia not to bomb Al-Qaeda as they can’t separate their ‘moderate’ rebels from Al-Qaeda with the US foreign Minister, John Kerry, asking for more time. After four months Kerry is still asking for more time.
Anyone with more than one brain cell can see that the US use Al-Qaeda or Al-Nusra to try and oust Assad claiming they are fighting Islamic State/Daesh. One must remember that Russia is the only country invited by the Syrian President to fight in their country. While Kerry asks for more time these terrorist groups continue to break the ceasefire to attack the Syrian Government Forces.
At the recent St. Petersburg Economic Forum Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, said; “The Americans are now saying that they are unable to remove the ‘good’ opposition members from the positions held by al-Nusra Front, and that they will need another two-three months. I am under the impression that there is a game here and they may want to keep al-Nusra Front in some form and later use it to overthrow the [Assad] regime.”
The Russian Ministry of Defence writes; ‘The Russian Aerospace Forces operated within the agreed procedures and forewarned member states of the US-led coalition about the ground targets to strike on. The American party has not presented coordinates of regions of activity of opposition controlled by the US. This caused impossibility to correct actions of the Russian aviation.
Therefore, actions by the Russian party have been carried out in strict observance of the Joint Russian-American statement and the Memorandum.
Moreover, within last few months, the Russian defence department has been suggesting compiling a joint map with actual information about location of forces active in Syria. However, there has been no significant progress reached.’
Russia’s Centre for Reconciliation in Syria observe ceasefire violations on a nearly daily basis stating they do not attack armed opposition who adhere to the ceasefire. The Russian Forces also do not attack the Kurds who are backed by the US because they are actually fighting Islamic State/Daesh.
So I think the US is going to have to separate ‘moderate’ rebels from other rebels or there will be more of the same attacks. As the days pass it becomes more obvious that Washington is not concentrating on Islamic State/Daesh but is concentrating on ousting Assad so they can put in their proxy government for their benefit. What will be Washington’s next move?
