After Chiquita Food Company pled guilty in 2007 to funding an organisation deemed as a global terrorist group by the US and paying a $25 million fine the executives of the company are now to be sued by the victims’ families. According to Mint Press News Chiquita funded the far-right paramilitary group AUC to the tune of $1.7 million between 1997-2004.
This paramilitary group acted as a death squad. After the victims’ families were not allowed in the past with their suits against the executives by US judges, one judge, Kenneth Mara, will now allow the suits against the executives to go ahead. A human rights group, Earthrights International (ERI) wrote in the judgement that “profits took priority over basic human welfare in the banana company executives decision to finance the illegal death squads, despite knowing that this would advance the paramilitaries’ murderous campaign”.
The lawsuit alleges that the former CEO and COO new very well that the funded money was used to engage in campaigns of terror using death threats, extrajudicial killings, torture, rape, kidnapping, forced disappearances and looting against the Colombian population.
This is how big corporations work if they can’t get their business model running properly because of the citizens not wanting their country turned into a factory for profit.
