How many more returned soldiers do we have to listen to say these very same things before we wake up and realise we are not at war with terrorism but soldiers are used as pawns and war is waged for big banker and big corporation profits. Major General Smedley Butler who was the most decorated Marine of his time mentioned it strongly. This is an excerpt from his speech in 1933;
“It may seem odd for me, a military man to adopt such a comparison. Truthfulness compels me to. I spent thirty- three years and four months in active military service as a member of this country's most agile military force, the Marine Corps. I served in all commissioned ranks from Second Lieutenant to Major-General. And during that period, I spent most of my time being a high class muscle- man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the Bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism”.
“There isn't a trick in the racketeering bag that the military gang is blind to. It has its "finger men" to point out enemies, its "muscle men" to destroy enemies, its "brain men" to plan war preparations, and a "Big Boss" Super-Nationalistic-Capitalism”.
“I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912 (where have I heard that name before?). I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. In China I helped to see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested”.
Some US veterans, like Heather Linebaugh are moving to Canada where they can safely speak out against war. Heather served in the US air Force in drone intelligence from 2009-2012 and she was honourably discharged. She earned the nickname ‘harbinger of death’ from her peers. What happens when drone strike missions don’t go so smoothly? Well, they’re not allowed to speak about it. “One mission in particular, I remember that we were told to keep quiet about, and to this day, I can still not discuss it.”
‘Heather says she challenged an officer of more senior rank on the issue. She asked what would happen if people spoke out about “sloppy strikes”. She was taken to her commander and warned about “talking recklessly” and asking “stupid questions”.
Mike Prysner was a US soldier in Iraq. He too has spoken out about the illegal wars waged by the bankers and corporations.
“the billionaires who profit from human suffering care only about expanding their wealth, controlling the world economy, understand that their power lies only in their ability to convince us that war, oppression, and exploitation is in our interests”.
“Racism within the military has long been an important tool to justify the destruction and occupation of another country. It has long been used to justify the killing, subjugation, and torture of another people. Racism is a vital weapon deployed by this government. It is a more important weapon than a rifle, a tank, a bomber or a battleship. It is more destructive than an artillery shell, or a bunker buster, or a tomahawk missile. While all of those weapons are created and owned by this government, they are harmless without people willing to use them”.
