Would you pay $3.5 million for research to discover why some people see Jesus on toast? Well that’s where tax payer dollars are going. Some scientific studies are absolutely ridiculous and make the average tax payer look like a sucker taken for a ride. An even longer ride than the one we’re usually taken on by our Governments.
Jeff Flake a US Senator from Arizona recently published a new report on tax payer money wasted on useless research. One study that cost tax payers $172,000 was to discover why coffee spills when we walk with it in our hands. The answer to this question from the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is “In the walking with coffee problem the motions of the human body, while seemingly regular, are quite complex and are coupled to a coffee cup and liquid therein, which makes it difficult to unravel the precise reasons behind coffee spilling”.
Jeff Flake began to investigate the problem of wasted money after the Director of the National Institutes of Health said in an interview in regards to Ebola in Africa “If we had not gone through our 10-year slide in research support, we probably would have had a vaccine in time for this...”
This is how some of the $32 billion annual budget is spent. This from the National Institutes of Health:
